Embracing Change: A Journey from Minneapolis to Milan

In life, we often find ourselves at crossroads, faced with decisions that shape our path forward. For me, this journey began with a leap of faith—a sabbatical year abroad in Milan, Italy. Little did I know, it would ignite a whirlwind of emotions and ultimately lead me to a life-altering decision.

The initial plunge into Milanese life was both exhilarating and daunting. From the bustling streets to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, every moment was filled with new experiences. Yet, beneath the surface, homesickness crept in, accompanied by doubts and fears. "What have I done?" I wondered, questioning my choice to leave familiarity behind.

But as time passed, something remarkable happened. I found myself falling in love with Milan—the simplicity, the sense of community, the joy that seemed to permeate every corner. It wasn't just about cheaper wine or better education; it was about embracing a way of life that resonated with my soul.

And then came the unexpected return to Minneapolis—a city once familiar, now transformed in the wake of societal upheaval. The post-George Floyd world had left its mark, casting shadows of uncertainty and unrest. Suddenly, the decision to leave America behind felt more urgent than ever.

In the midst of political turmoil and cultural shifts, the contrast between Italy and the U.S. became starkly apparent. While Italy embodied an old-world charm, steeped in simplicity and equality, America seemed to veer further from its ideals. The prospect of another presidential term under Trump looms ominously, driving home the realization that I no longer want to be surrounded by such discord.

So here I am, at the intersection of past and future, reflecting on a journey that has brought me full circle. My decision to relocate permanently to Milan is not just about finding a new home; it's about embracing a way of life that aligns with my values. In Italy, I've discovered a sense of belonging, a community where joy is abundant, and where coffee tastes sweeter and conversations linger a little longer.

As I embark on this next chapter, I'm reminded that sometimes, a move abroad is more than just a change of scenery—it's a transformation of the soul. And in embracing change, we find the courage to redefine our lives and create a future filled with hope and possibility.

So here's to new beginnings, to following our hearts, and to embracing the journey wherever it may lead.

Grazie, Milano, for welcoming me with open arms. And to Minneapolis, may you find peace and healing in the midst of uncertainty. As for me, I've found my place in the world, and there's no looking back.
